Laguna Kaan Luum

The "Yellow Earth" Lagoon

Located a few kilometers south of Tulum (8 miles – 15 minutes), the laguna Kaan Luum will amaze you for sure!

In the Mayan language, its name means Yellow Earth, in reference to the clay of the lagoon. The vast majority of the lagoon is very shallow, with a cenote at its center dropping up to 80 meters deep. This explains the strong color contrast in the lagoon, the yellow/green/turquoise is the very shallow part while the dark blue is the cenote.

From the car park to the lagoon, we walk a few minutes on a track in the jungle, then we take a wooden pontoon to cross the mangrove area.

Laguna Kaan Luum is a like a very large natural pool. You can walk/swim in the shallow waters around the two piers. Bringing a floating buoy is a good idea to relax even more! You can also rent kayaks/paddles on site.

The owners of the site have added many small “photo booths” in the area, some with hammocks but also swings… you can be sure to have great photos, and reels… See if you can climb on the swing the first time!

The deep part of the cenote is not allowed to swim, it is delimited by a barrier. Only freedivers and scuba diving agencies can access this deeper area.

Do not forget to take the time to climb (safely) the Mirador (watch tower), you will have a breathtaking view of the lagoon. A Mexican flag hangs there, another great photo to add to your Mexico photo album!

If you have a drone, it is interesting to bring it (by paying a supplement at the entrance to the site) because the view of the sky is just magnificent!
