Snorkeling Tours Playa del Carmen

Tips for Snorkeling Tours in Playa del Carmen

The basic tips for snorkeling

One of the most popular activities in Playa del Carmen is snorkeling – and why not! The water is warm and clear and the offshore reef at Riviera Maya is home to many colorful fish, anemones and corals. You can snorkel off the beach, in a cenote, or on a guided snorkeling tour Playa del Carmen.

Here’s what you need for the best Playa del Carmen snorkeling experience:

Snorkeling tips for beginners

  • Choose a good quality snorkel that has a purge valve on top to stop water entering. Check it is correctly attached on the left side of your mask.
  • Choose a mask that fits snugly to your face and keep hair out of the seal. Before getting into the water, spit into the mask and rub it around. It decreases surface tension and prevents fog forming.
  • Children and nervous swimmers should wear a life vest that is the correct size and weight to keep you buoyant.
  • Some snorkeling spots do not permit fins due to potential coral damage, so check with your snorkeling tour guide first. Water shoes are a good alternative.

Environmental tips for snorkeling tours in Playa del Carmen

  • Look but don’t touch. Some creatures are poisonous or have stings, and some corals can burn your skin. Conversely, your touch may stress marine life and harm corals, which are threatened. Read more info on our dedicated article.
  • Stay horizontal and be careful not to damage the reef when kicking with fins.
  • Ask your snorkeling tour guide about sunscreens. In some places it is forbidden as the chemicals can harm the reef and sea creatures. The best protection for you and the environment is to wear a lycra T-shirt or wetsuit to avoid sunburn.
  • Don’t collect souvenirs. Leave corals, sand, shells and other interesting finds exactly where they belong – in the sea. It’s the law!

Tips for underwater videos

  • Bring a GoPro or underwater camera on your Playa del Carmen snorkeling tour or buy a special case for your phone. Underwater videos and photos are the best way to re-live the sights once your snorkeling tour is over.
  • Avoid flash photography. If you must, ask your tour guide first if it is allowed.
  • Bring a floating stick for selfies and close-ups on the reef.
  • Make sure your camera is fully charged and carry a spare battery!

Finally, always check the weather forecast and ocean conditions before snorkeling. If you’re on a snorkeling tour, check in with your guide the day before. Follow our tips and you’ll have an amazing “snorkeling tour Playa del Carmen” that will be the highlight of your stay!
