Private Boat Tour for Reef Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos

If you're looking for the best Puerto Morelos reef snorkeling experience, look no further. At Absolute Adventure Mexico, we believe a snorkeling tour should be all-inclusive, worry-free, and unforgettable. That’s exactly what we offer with our private boat tour to the Puerto Morelos coral reef, one of the richest marine areas in the Riviera Maya.

  1. Explore the Protected Puerto Morelos Coral Reef

Puerto Morelos is home to one of Mexico’s most treasured natural wonders—the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world. This stretch of reef has been under federal protection as a National Marine Park since 1998, helping marine life flourish in crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

During your snorkeling adventure, you’ll explore colorful coral gardens teeming with marine biodiversity. You’re likely to see angelfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, trumpetfish, damselfish, and even spotted eagle rays, lobsters, and the occasional barracuda or nurse shark cruising through the reef. The shallow depth and calm waters make this spot perfect for both beginner and experienced snorkelers.

  2. Certified Boats, Experienced Crew & Quality Equipment

Your safety and comfort are top priorities. That’s why we operate with a boat and crew certified by the Puerto Morelos Marine Park authority, ensuring full compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

We also provide high-quality snorkeling gear—well-maintained masks, fins, and snorkels—for a smooth and enjoyable underwater experience. Life jackets are available and mandatory per marine park rules.

The boat used for this tour is reserved privately for your group and includes a shaded area to protect you from the sun.

  3. Personalized Experience from Start to Finish

Your day begins with private transportation from your hotel to Puerto Morelos. Upon arrival, your certified guide will lead you on a 2-hour private boat tour, with stops at two top reef snorkeling spots chosen based on daily conditions. No crowds, no stress—just you and the beauty of the Caribbean Sea.

After your snorkeling session, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in Puerto Morelos, known for fresh, regional cuisine.

Five Adventurers, Two Private Tours, Endless MemoriesOur family of five had the absolute pleasure of booking two private tours with Absolute Adventure Mexico during our February holiday in Cancun, and it was truly one of the highlights of our trip. Our first excursion was scheduled to be a half-day reef snorkeling tour in Puerto Morelos, but due to high winds the port authority closed the reef that morning. Instead of cancelling, the tour operator immediately offered flexible options and allowed us to switch days, giving us the opportunity to do our Tulum tour first and hopefully reschedule the reef snorkeling later in the week. We really appreciated how proactive and accommodating they were. That day, we explored the beautiful ruins of Tulum and swam in two incredible cenotes with our guide, Arturo. He was absolutely amazing with our family — especially our three daughters. One of our daughters had just completed a Grade 11 history course and learned a little bit about Mayan culture, and Arturo encouraged her to share what she knew as we walked through the ruins. He made the experience interactive, educational, and fun, mixing history with humor in a way that kept everyone engaged.Although the tour was originally supposed to include swimming with sea turtles, the winds made that unsafe. The company offered us an additional cenote instead, and we were so glad they did. Swimming in the cenotes was unforgettable — learning about the vegetation and fish in one, and then exploring stalagmites and stalactites in the other (Dos Ojos). Arturo guided us through caves and even into a dark bat cave that attracts many cave divers. He spoke with our oldest daughter about lichen (she’s majoring in biology), and gently reassured our youngest daughter as we navigated some narrow cave passages. His knowledge, patience, and warmth made the entire experience both exciting and comfortable. We wrapped up the day with lunch at a local restaurant, still chatting about everything we had seen and learned. It was truly a memorable and meaningful family experience.Later in the week — despite continued windy conditions — we were lucky enough to get out for our private reef snorkeling tour in Puerto Morelos with our second guide, Joshua. The town was buzzing with activity due to a local swimming event, and there were plenty of other tour groups around. Joshua did a fantastic job keeping us together and organized as we navigated to the boat and out to the reef.Snorkeling over the reef was absolutely incredible. We saw a sleeping nurse shark, several barracudas, and countless colorful fish. The highlight for me was floating above a sea turtle — a moment I will never forget. Having already snorkeled in the cenotes earlier in the week helped us feel very comfortable and confident in the water. Both tours reinforced the value of booking private experiences. Having full access to our guides allowed us to move at our own pace, ask questions, focus on what interested us most, and truly connect as a family. Everything was seamless — from resort pick-up and drop-off to having all equipment ready for us.The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely passionate about what they do. We highly recommend this company to any family looking for a personalized, educational, and unforgettable adventure in Cancun. We would book with them again in a heartbeat!

We had a wonderful day of snorkelling off the port of Puerto Morelos. Paz was our captain and he was wonderful. Kevin was also a wonderful tour guide. And Juan made the whole experience exceptional from the start. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Their equipment was above average compared to what you would get from similar tour operators. We had a group that ranged in age from 10 to 83 and they were able to accommodate us all. I would really like to give a shout out to Juan who made the day seamless!! Thank you!

The transportation and activity itself were seamless, though I did feel the 2 hours in the water went by way too quick. I definitely recommend bringing an underwater camera because it’s extremely difficult to take pictures on your phone. The equipment was provided for us but it took some getting used to since I wasn’t experienced with snorkeling. Overall Arturo and the trip were a great memory on our trip!

Our tour guide, Arturo, was so thoughtful, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to spend the day with, and our driver, Enrique, was very professional and friendly. We also loved the crew who took us snorkeling in Puerto Morelos. The tours themselves were breathtaking and surpassed our expectations. When snorkeling, our guides made sure to take us to great spots and made sure to find us a sea turtle! We also received great recommendations from Arturo on which cenote (niche-ha) and cave (pet cemetery) to visit—they were both gorgeous and mesmerizing. Lunch on both tours were also fantastic! 10/10!

Water was warm and clear, and visibility underwater was excellent. We saw butterflyfish, damselfish, parrotfish, and even a ray gliding above the reef. Excellent tour and great service.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Your tour questions, answered.

Tour basics

Is the Puerto Morelos Snorkeling tour private or shared?

This is a private tour, just for you and your group.

You’ll have a dedicated guide and vehicle all to yourselves—no crowds, no waiting, just a smooth and personalized experience.

Is the driver also the guide?

No. The driver and guide are two different professionals.

All our tours include a dedicated driver and a separate certified guide.

While some companies offer a guide-driver, we believe this is not safe. Having a driver focused solely on the road and a guide fully dedicated to our guests ensures a safer and higher-quality experience.

How long does the private Puerto Morelos reef snorkeling tour take?

It typically lasts between 4 to 5 hours, depending on your hotel location and how much time you’d like to spend at each site. Please check the full itinerary in the “Itinerary” tab for more details.

Pickup & transport

Is transportation included from my hotel or Airbnb?

Yes, round-trip transportation is included from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We’ll pick you up right from your hotel, resort, or Airbnb for a stress-free start to your day.

Note:

  • We don’t offer pick up from Cancun Playa Mujeres hotels unless your group has 6 or more adults.
  • We do not offer pickup  from locations south of Playa del Carmen, including areas like Akumal, Tulum, and beyond.
What vehicles do you use for your tours?

We offer a range of modern, air-conditioned vans to suit the size of your group and ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

Visit our fleet page for more details.

Can I change the pick up time?

Yes, you’re welcome to choose your preferred pick-up time when booking.

Activities & facilities

Is snorkeling experience required for this tour?

No previous snorkeling experience is required, but basic swimming skills are necessary.

We provide mandatory life vests, and our guide ensures a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.

What kind of boat is used for the snorkeling tour?

We go out on a local snorkeling boat, guided by a friendly and experienced crew that’s officially certified by the marine park.

The boat is equipped with a side ladder, making it easy to get back on board after snorkeling.

Will we see turtles during the reef snorkeling tour?

Turtle sightings are possible but not guaranteed.

During the snorkeling experience, you’ll mostly see beautiful coral formations, schools of tropical fish, and with some luck, a sea turtle or stingray.

If seeing turtles is your main goal, the best place is Akumal, where sightings are nearly guaranteed. Akumal is one of the top spots in the region for swimming with sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Are there showers or changing rooms at the pier?

Yes. Facilities include clean showers, restrooms, and changing areas at the pier.

What happens in case of bad weather?

We check the weather conditions the afternoon before the tour. If the marine park determines it’s not safe to go out, we’ll contact you to reschedule the tour (based on mutual availability) or proceed with a cancellation and refund of your deposit.

Please note: Only cancellations due to official marine park closure or unsafe conditions decided by us are eligible for a deposit refund. If we determine that conditions are safe and you choose not to join the tour, our standard cancellation policy applies.

Planning & booking

What should I bring for the tour? Where can I leave my belongings?

Check the "What to bring" tab on the tour page for the full packing list. Essentials include swimwear and a towel.

You can safely leave your belongings in the van—our driver stays with it the entire time while you're out enjoying the activities.

Can I bring my own snorkeling gear?

Yes, you can bring your own mask, snorkel and fins.

We will still provide our own gear as a backup if needed.

We will also provide mandatory life vests.

Are vegetarian or special dietary meals available?

Yes, we’re happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs or allergies.

After booking, you can let us know your needs by filling out the check-in form—just follow the link in your booking confirmation email.

What is the cancellation policy?

Go ahead and plan with confidence—your booking is fully flexible!

You can cancel free of charge or reschedule (subject to availability) up to 24 hours before your tour.

We’re a small team and often fully booked 1–2 weeks in advance, so we recommend booking early to secure your spot.

Bonus: if you book at least 2 months in advance (60 days), you’ll qualify for our early bird discount*!
