Private Boat Tour for Reef Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos

If you're looking for the best Puerto Morelos reef snorkeling experience, look no further. At Absolute Adventure Mexico, we believe a snorkeling tour should be all-inclusive, worry-free, and unforgettable. That’s exactly what we offer with our private boat tour to the Puerto Morelos coral reef, one of the richest marine areas in the Riviera Maya.

  1. Explore the Protected Puerto Morelos Coral Reef

Puerto Morelos is home to one of Mexico’s most treasured natural wonders—the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world. This stretch of reef has been under federal protection as a National Marine Park since 1998, helping marine life flourish in crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

During your snorkeling adventure, you’ll explore colorful coral gardens teeming with marine biodiversity. You’re likely to see angelfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, trumpetfish, damselfish, and even spotted eagle rays, lobsters, and the occasional barracuda or nurse shark cruising through the reef. The shallow depth and calm waters make this spot perfect for both beginner and experienced snorkelers.

  2. Certified Boats, Experienced Crew & Quality Equipment

Your safety and comfort are top priorities. That’s why we operate with a boat and crew certified by the Puerto Morelos Marine Park authority, ensuring full compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

We also provide high-quality snorkeling gear—well-maintained masks, fins, and snorkels—for a smooth and enjoyable underwater experience. Life jackets are available and mandatory per marine park rules.

The boat used for this tour is reserved privately for your group and includes a shaded area to protect you from the sun.

  3. Personalized Experience from Start to Finish

Your day begins with private transportation from your hotel to Puerto Morelos. Upon arrival, your certified guide will lead you on a 2-hour private boat tour, with stops at two top reef snorkeling spots chosen based on daily conditions. No crowds, no stress—just you and the beauty of the Caribbean Sea.

After your snorkeling session, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in Puerto Morelos, known for fresh, regional cuisine.

Short trip to Puerto Morelos from our hotel where we met the captain and tour guide for snorkeling, Kevin.
Everyone involved was very accommodating, took their time to make sure we understood the plan and the rules.
Getting on the boat was simple from the dock, getting in the water was an easy slide over the side and we snorkeled for about an hour and a half. Arturo and Kevin put us on a lot of structure, we saw so many neat and colorful fish. Trigger fish, needle fish, rainbow parrot fish, a whole bunch of barracudas, conchs and they even got us on a couple of sea turtles feeding.
Getting back on the boat was also easy, they have a built-in ladder that extends into the water far enough to just walk up.
Overall, 10/10, would book again in a heartbeat. Arturo and Kevin, thank you so much!

Snorkeling Reef 1/2 Day
Did a private boat tour to snorkle off the coast of Puerto Morelos. Juan was our guide. All in all a fun 1/2 day with a personable and attentive guide. The boat can't get real close to the reef so you have to swim out against the waves. That was intimidating at first but they made me comfortable right away but allowing me to hang onto the ring the boat driver was carrying. We saw WAY more fish on the Cenote tour to a lagoon but thats not their fault! It was super fun and worth the money to do a private tour since we didn't want to do lunch, shopping... Etc. Most tours include those things. Felt safe at all times. Pick up at hotel was on time!

We had a great snorkelling experience with Arturo as our guide who was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Joaquin, the boat driver was a confident experienced snorkeller who led the way, pointing out all the beautiful fish and coral. He was so helpful to us. Arturo took us for a delicious lunch afterwards. It was a great day!

James · Sep 2024

I loved how personal the tour felt — it was really just our group, the crew, and the sea. Snorkeling easy and enjoyable. After snorkeling we enjoyed tasty tacos in town — a full and satisfying experience. We will take this tour again next time.

The snorkeling was fun, and the reef was great with plenty to see. The gear worked fine, and the life jackets helped me feel safe. The guide was friendly and kept things running smoothly.

Absolutely worth it! The private tour gave us a relaxed pace to explore the reef and spot amazing fish and coral. The boat was clean and had shade, and the lunch afterward was delicious!

Today we went snorkeling in Puerto Morales with Arturo. We had a group of 9 including two younger children. Everyone enjoyed themselves and saw lots of features including a sting ray! The young ones had no difficulty snorkeling.
Afterwards we went to a really good beachside seafood restaurant and had the most delicious meal of our trip.
Our guide was informative, kind, and was easy to visit with.
Again, we always choose Absolute Adventure. Highly recommend.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Your tour questions, answered.

Tour basics

Is the Puerto Morelos Snorkeling tour private or shared?

This is a private tour, just for you and your group.

You’ll have a dedicated guide and vehicle all to yourselves—no crowds, no waiting, just a smooth and personalized experience.

Is the driver also the guide?

No. The driver and guide are two different professionals.

All our tours include a dedicated driver and a separate certified guide.

While some companies offer a guide-driver, we believe this is not safe. Having a driver focused solely on the road and a guide fully dedicated to our guests ensures a safer and higher-quality experience.

How long does the private Puerto Morelos reef snorkeling tour take?

It typically lasts between 4 to 5 hours, depending on your hotel location and how much time you’d like to spend at each site. Please check the full itinerary in the “Itinerary” tab for more details.

Pickup & transport

Is transportation included from my hotel or Airbnb?

Yes, round-trip transportation is included from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We’ll pick you up right from your hotel, resort, or Airbnb for a stress-free start to your day.

Note:

  • We don’t offer pick up from Cancun Playa Mujeres hotels unless your group has 6 or more adults.
  • We do not offer pickup  from locations south of Playa del Carmen, including areas like Akumal, Tulum, and beyond.
What vehicles do you use for your tours?

We offer a range of modern, air-conditioned vans to suit the size of your group and ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

Visit our fleet page for more details.

Can I change the pick up time?

Yes, you’re welcome to choose your preferred pick-up time when booking.

Activities & facilities

Is snorkeling experience required for this tour?

No previous snorkeling experience is required, but basic swimming skills are necessary.

We provide mandatory life vests, and our guide ensures a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.

What kind of boat is used for the snorkeling tour?

We go out on a local snorkeling boat, guided by a friendly and experienced crew that’s officially certified by the marine park.

The boat is equipped with a side ladder, making it easy to get back on board after snorkeling.

Will we see turtles during the reef snorkeling tour?

Turtle sightings are possible but not guaranteed.

During the snorkeling experience, you’ll mostly see beautiful coral formations, schools of tropical fish, and with some luck, a sea turtle or stingray.

If seeing turtles is your main goal, the best place is Akumal, where sightings are nearly guaranteed. Akumal is one of the top spots in the region for swimming with sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Are there showers or changing rooms at the pier?

Yes. Facilities include clean showers, restrooms, and changing areas at the pier.

What happens in case of bad weather?

We check the weather conditions the afternoon before the tour. If the marine park determines it’s not safe to go out, we’ll contact you to reschedule the tour (based on mutual availability) or proceed with a cancellation and refund of your deposit.

Please note: Only cancellations due to official marine park closure or unsafe conditions decided by us are eligible for a deposit refund. If we determine that conditions are safe and you choose not to join the tour, our standard cancellation policy applies.

Planning & booking

What should I bring for the tour? Where can I leave my belongings?

Check the "What to bring" tab on the tour page for the full packing list. Essentials include swimwear and a towel.

You can safely leave your belongings in the van—our driver stays with it the entire time while you're out enjoying the activities.

Can I bring my own snorkeling gear?

Yes, you can bring your own mask, snorkel and fins.

We will still provide our own gear as a backup if needed.

We will also provide mandatory life vests.

Are vegetarian or special dietary meals available?

Yes, we’re happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs or allergies.

After booking, you can let us know your needs by filling out the check-in form—just follow the link in your booking confirmation email.

What is the cancellation policy?

Go ahead and plan with confidence—your booking is fully flexible!

You can cancel free of charge or reschedule (subject to availability) up to 24 hours before your tour.

We’re a small team and often fully booked 1–2 weeks in advance, so we recommend booking early to secure your spot.

Bonus: if you book at least 2 months in advance (60 days), you’ll qualify for our early bird discount*!
