Tequila Tour in Playa del Carmen & Tulum: Discover Mexico’s Spirits in a Jungle Tasting Experience

When you think of Mexico, a few things might immediately come to mind—turquoise beaches, ancient ruins, tacos, and of course… tequila.

Whether you’re staying in Playa del Carmen or Tulum, tasting tequila and mezcal is one of the most enjoyable ways to connect with Mexican culture. But while souvenir shops and busy bars might offer a quick sip, we believe there’s a better way.

At Absolute Adventure Mexico, we invite you to slow down, step away from the crowds, and indulge in a private tequila and mezcal tasting—set in a peaceful jungle garden, guided by a passionate expert, and designed exclusively for your group.

Here’s everything you need to know about tequila, mezcal, and why our private Tequila tasting tour is one of the most unique experiences in the Riviera Maya.

Tequila & Mezcal Tasting

What is Tequila? A Taste of the Blue Agave

Tequila is one of the most recognized spirits in the world, but not everyone knows what makes it truly special. By law, tequila can only be made in specific regions of Mexico—most famously, the state of Jalisco—and must be distilled from 100% blue Weber agave.

There are several types of tequila, each with a unique flavor and character:

Blanco (Silver): Unaged and crisp, with strong agave notes.

Reposado: Aged in oak barrels for 2–12 months, smoother with light vanilla and spice tones.

Añejo: Aged 1–3 years, rich and complex.

Extra Añejo: Aged over 3 years, with deep flavors like caramel, oak, and cocoa.

Drinking tequila isn’t just about shots—it’s about savoring the subtlety and craftsmanship behind each bottle.

What is Mezcal and How is it Different?

Like tequila, mezcal is a distilled spirit made from agave—but that’s where the similarities end.

While tequila can only come from blue agave, mezcal can be made from dozens of agave varieties, often using more traditional methods. The result is a spirit with bold, earthy, and smoky flavors. The agave hearts are roasted underground, giving mezcal its signature aroma.

In many ways, mezcal is a more rustic, artisanal spirit compared to tequila. It’s deeply rooted in tradition and regional pride—and just like tequila, it’s meant to be sipped and appreciated slowly.

Tequila & Mezcal Tastings in Playa del Carmen and Tulum: What to Expect

Across Playa del Carmen and Tulum, you’ll find many shops and restaurants offering tequila or mezcal tastings. Some are included in souvenir shopping stops, others are quick pairings with lunch or dinner.

While these can be fun, they’re often rushed, noisy, and focused more on selling bottles than truly teaching about the spirits. For travelers who want to go beyond the surface, a dedicated tasting guided by a knowledgeable host is a far richer experience.

Why Choose a Private Tequila Tour Over a Store or Bar?

At a bar, you’re paying for atmosphere—but often with limited selection or knowledge.

At a store, tastings are quick and commercial.

With our private tasting, you get the best of both worlds: a beautiful setting, expert guidance, and high-quality spirits—all in a relaxed and intimate format. No sales pitch, no crowds, no waiting.

Just you, the jungle, and the heart of Mexico in your glass.
