Once you’ve booked your holidays in the Riviera Maya, the next step will be to pack your suitcase for your exciting Mexican vacation! We know how hard it can be to keep track of everything you need to bring along on a trip, so we’ve come up with a handy list of recommended items to help ensure you don’t leave anything important at home.

Clothing
When you start going through your closet to choose clothing to bring along, keep in mind that the Riviera Maya’s annual average temperatures are between 77 and 90°F (25 and 32°C), with lows of 60°F (15°C) during the night in the winter. Most of the year, it’s hot and humid, so you’ll want light clothing that breathes well. One item we recommend during fall or winter is a lightweight windbreaker that you can use when it’s raining or on a chilly night.
Footwear
While you may think you only need sandals for a tropical vacation, think again! If your tour includes visiting archaeological sites like Coba, Tulum, or Chichen Itza, or other activities in the jungle, you’ll definitely need to bring along a pair of tennis shoes. Flip flops or water shoes are also necessary for tours that include water-based activities, such as snorkeling in a cenote or swimming in the Caribbean Sea. If you’re planning to enjoy the region’s vibrant nightlife, ladies should also bring along a nice pair of sandals.
Outdoor Necessities
This might seem obvious, but don’t forget your swimsuit and towel! Women may also want to consider bringing along a cover-up or pareo to wear. The Riviera Maya is known for its sunshine, so you’ll also want to have sunglasses, a hat, and biodegradable sunscreen with you! It is very important that you only use biodegradable products in our delicate ecosystem, since regular sunscreen contains chemicals that harm our world-famous coral reefs.
Another important item to bring along is biodegradable insect repellent to protect you from pesky mosquitoes, especially if you’re visiting jungle areas. It’s also a good idea to bring along a small backpack or bag that you can use to carry throughout the day.
Electronics
Mexico uses the same voltage (110V) as the United States and Canada, so if you’re from outside of North America, make sure to bring along a plug adapter unless you want to fry your electronics! WiFi is available almost everywhere, so you don’t have to worry about checking your email.
In terms of devices, we definitely recommend bringing along a camera in order to document your trip, or even better, an underwater camera or GoPro! Other popular devices include tablets or e-readers to use in your free time, although you can always go for a traditional book instead.
Money
Last but certainly not least, you should bring along money! It’s generally easiest to use Mexican pesos when making purchases in shops and restaurants, but U.S. dollars are also widely accepted. If you want to avoid high ATM fees, we recommend exchanging your currency at a bank or official exchange shops.
