Sian Ka’an Private Boat Tour
Just a little over an hour’s drive south from Playa del Carmen is the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve, a beautiful nature and archaeology attraction that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. One of the best ways to explore this popular attraction in a relaxing, peaceful way is by going on our Sian Ka’an excursion, which includes bird watching, a private boat tour of its lagoons, swimming, and a visit to a Maya temple.
Sian Ka’an means “where the sky is born” in the Mayan language, which is easy to understand once you’ve seen the area’s immense natural beauty. Centuries ago, the ancient Maya used to cross the reserve in canoes to reach Muyil, one of the earliest sites they inhabited, in order to trade. During the Maya civilization’s Preclassic and Classic periods, they used several sites like Muyil along the Caribbean Sea to trade everything from jade and feathers to chocolate and salt.
Today, the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve is best known for its wide variety of plant and animal species as well as its many Maya archaeological sites. With our 2-hour boat tour, you can enjoy viewing birds like eagles, pelicans, frigate birds, and geese as we explore its lagoons and pass through the canals the Mayas created to navigate the mangrove. We’ll also stop to visit a small yet fascinating Maya temple, go for a refreshing swim in the cool water of one of the canals, and finally head back to Muyil.
Another great option that is perfect for nature lovers is our long boat tour (+/- 4 hours), which includes all of the before mentioned activities, but with extended time to explore the reserve. On this tour, we go all the way to the last lagoon that connects to the Caribbean Sea. If you’re lucky, you might even have the chance to see crocodiles and manatees! If you’ve never seen a manatee before, it’s a truly unique experience to see these majestic marine mammals up close in their natural environment. Our final stop before heading back to Muyil is one of the beautiful beaches in the biosphere reserve.
While some companies offer the traditional jeep tour of Sian Ka’an to Punta Allen, our private boat tours from Muyil are perfect for visitors who are interested in a unique option that focuses more on spending a relaxing day enjoying the natural wonders of the reserve. This tour also keeps you from losing 8 hours of your day to driving around Sian Ka’an, so you can spend more time in the biosphere reserve while also avoiding the crowds!
Depending on boat availability, we offer private boat tours that depart in either the morning or the afternoon. If you choose the 2-hour boat tour, the entire expedition will take about 5 hours, including transportation to and from the Playa del Carmen area. With the 4-hour boat tour, the total time equals approximately 7 hours including transportation.
Finally, if you want to add a visit to the Maya ruins in Muyil before or after your boat tour, another hour will be added to the itinerary.
