Ponderosa El Eden

Diving in Cenote El Eden – Ponderosa

cenote el eden

Cenote El Eden or Ponderosa is a very sizable and and vast cenote which gives the illusion that you’ve arrived at a swimming pool in the middle of the jungle. The large cenote has crystalline waters, is teeming with marine life and a variety of exotic, aquatic plants and in addition to diving is a great spot for snorkelers and swimmers.

A short walk through the beautiful jungle, where you might spot some indigenous birds, brings you to the cenote. Here you’ll enter the water and at the spacious entrance you will be greeted with rocks and limestone covered with moss and algae but never fear, this does not inhibit the exceptional visibility of the water. Moving forward through the dive you will see a coral garden and will also enjoy swimming in and out of a remarkable halocline, the area where fresh and salt water meet and mingle.

Many different underwater passages lead off from Cenote el Eden and connect to some of the other cenotes in the area. One exceptionally large pass leads to nearby Cenote Coral Garden which is renowned for the visually stunning underwater display that is a result of the great light penetration here.

With depths ranging up to 50 feet and wide open rooms, Cenote el Eden is ideal for divers of all levels. This is a favorite spot for snorkelers as well and for the daring, there is a cliff that stretches 15 foot up over some deep waters of the cenote that more than one brave soul has taken a leap from.
