The Pit Cenote

Scuba Diving in Cenote El Pit

Adventurers and lovers of challenging dives will definitely want to visit Cenote El Pit. A part of the Dos Ojos Cave System located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, at close to 200 feet this is the deepest cenote around and also one of the most incredible.

Because Cenote El Pit is hard to get to and is quite remote, for the longest time this cenote was visited by only the brave and headstrong few. While still burdensome, it has become easier to access in recent years and for those who are persistent and gutsy enough, the payoff is incredible.

Just getting to Cenote El Pit is a feat of endurance over a bumpy dirt road through the jungle. Once we’ve arrived we’ll take the recently added stairs down the side of the cenote about 20 feet where we’ll then enter into the crystal clear pond. Right away you’ll be enthralled with the view as light beams slice through the water for a visually stunning display as we being our descent. At about 100 feet you will encounter a light, white hydrogen sulfide cloud. The hydrogen sulfide cloud is thin enough that ambient light shines through and will give you the chance to see animal skeletons and bones and the remnants of an old fireplace along the bottom, or if you look up you can see all the way to the entrance which is ringed with trees.

During the ascent in cenote El Pit you will circle the cavern and explore the enormous stalactites and once you are in shallower waters you can see markings on the wall that denote the various water levels here over the centuries as well as the ceiling with its spectacular formations and decorations.
