Cenote Chikin Ha

Diving in Cenote Chikin Ha

Cenote Chikin Ha means “Water of the West” and serves as the gateway to a system that connects multiple cenotes and spans more than six miles of amazing underwater passages.

One of the more visually appealing dives, this natural wonder is full of surprises and there is a never a dull moment to be had. Every direction you turn during your dive and everywhere you look you will discover something new to explore and experience.

This cenote is a large half moon circle with an enormous undercut ceiling. Once you enter the water for a dive at Cenote Chikin Ha you’ll immediately be struck by the beautiful and interesting way the light interacts and plays with the water. You’ll begin to make your way forward through a halocline tunnel, a hazy mixture of salt and fresh water, towards the neighboring Cenote Arcoiris or Rainbow Cenote. Here as the sunbeams light up the different colors in the water you’ll immediately understand and appreciate where the name Rainbow Cenote comes from. During the traverse you’ll be struck by the interesting optical effects that the halocline causes.

Continuing along be sure to keep an eye out for different crystal formations, mineral deposits and numerous clusters of different kinds of fossils including multiple sea urchins. As you move forward closer to the surface you’ll see begin to see roots of trees pushing their way through the limestone rocks and reaching for their water source. Be sure to look forward towards the entrance as you approach it and on sunny days you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular light show. Once out of the water keep your eyes and ears peeled for the various birds who call Cenote Chikin Ha home.
