Cenote Angelita Scuba Diving

One of the most unique diving experiences in the Riviera Maya can be found at Cenote Angelita (Little Angel). This cenote is a bit further away from Playa del Carmen, but the time it takes to reach Cenote Angelita is worth it for the not-to-be-missed experience.

This is one of the few cenotes in the world that drops straight down for 200 feet. Divers will enter the water and start their descent down through fresh, crystal-clear water with virtually unlimited visibility. As you’re descending you’ll be able to view large stalactite formations that are situated around the edges. At about 100 feet, right when divers start to experience the first feelings of narcosis, you will arrive at a hazy, thin layer of hydrogen-sulfide that will give you the dreamlike sensation of swimming through the clouds.

Here you’ll start to see tree trunks and branches reaching out to you through the mist giving a surreal feeling of a forest situated in the clouds. In addition, the hydrogen-sulfate layer provides the illusion of an underwater river. Leaves and branches scattered along the ‘shoreline’ gives this setting an even more realistic feel.

Divers can descend a few feet further through the layer where you’ll now find yourself immersed in salt water. The hydrogen-sulfate layer blocks out the light so the salt water is dark, requiring the use of a dive light. Here you will see a thicket of trees and so it will feel like you are in the middle of a magical, mystical underwater woodland forest at night.

Diving in Cenote Angelita is a secret, otherworldly dive that must be experienced to truly understand how special and unique this place truly is.
